ACADEMY PLASTIC HOBBY MODEL KIT 1/288 SPACE SHUTTLE & JUMBO 747

Althought the Space Shuttle can travel faster and farther than any other aircraft yet flying, unless it is on a space voyage, it must depend on other means of tansportation just to get from one side of the country to the other. Since it must use such large external boosters to place it into the air, it is not feasible to launch the shuttle for less than orbital flight. To provide for "local' hops. NASA obtained a giant Boeing 747 airliner from American Airlines, and altered it to carry the shuttle In a special cradle mounted to the fuselage. In addition, a pair of vertical stabilizers was Installed to Increase the stability of the 747 during the captive flights, and to provide the necessary vertical surface for safe flight in the event the shuttle collided with the 747's large tail fin.
The 747 was specifically modified for the initial fIight testing of the spaceship. To determine the flight characteristics of the shuttle, it was mounted in the airliner and carried to altitude. During captive flights, in which the shuttle remained attached to the 747, the oontrols and other systems were tested as the pair cruised over Edwards Air Force Base. Eventually, the shuttle was carried aircraft and released as the 747 went Into a shallow dive, and the spacecraft was flown back to Edwards on its own. the final proof of its aerodynamic ability.
The shuttle, which is about the size and weight of a medium jet airliner, Is secured to the cradle after being lifted by a hoist To reduced the drag caused by the exposed rocket engines, a streamlined shroud is attached to the rear of the shuttle. Although it cannot provide any of its own power for the flight, the lifting charocteristics of the shuttle design utilized. The pilots report that the flight characteristics of the 747, even with such a large object attached to its back, are basically the same as in normal configuration.

ACADEMY PLASTIC HOBBY MODEL KIT 1/48 P-38F LIGHTINING "GLACIER GIRL"

The Lost Squadron
During the summer of 1942. one of World War II' s most fascinating sagas took place on the icy slopes of Greenland. A flight of World War II airplanes were being flown to England from the United States in support of the war in Europe. In the early morning of July 15, a Hight of two B-17 Bombers and six P-38 Fighters departed from BW1 (today Sondre Stromfjord) airbase on the west coast of Greenland headed for England. The planes were part of operation Bolero, code name for the growing allied force that would someday liberate occupied Europe from Hitler's armies. As the planes streamed over the barren landscape. they flew into a massive storm system near Iceland. In an attempt to avoid the storm, they climbed higher. But the cloud cover thickened, ice formed on the wings. and the inadequately protected pilots began to suffer from the severe cold. In desperation, the flight turned back for the safety of Greenland. But, again, they ran into storms. With fuel running low, the planes broke through the heavy cloud cover. However, when the flight established its location, the crews realized they were far from their base and would not have enough fuel to return safety. Their only chance for survival was to crash land on the glacial wastes of Greenland. Since the icecap appeared to be smooth, flat and hard, the first plane to attempt landing, a P-38, came in with its wheels down, Although the plane flipped over, the pilot, 1st. Lt. Brad McManus, sustained only minor injuries. Amazingly, all remaining aircraft got down without significant injuries to any of the men. It was the largest forced landing in Air Force history--including six P-38s. two B-17s and 25 crewmembers. They were stranded ten miles south of the Arctic Circle. Fortunately, after eleven days the men were rescued by a 5-man rescue team from a US Army weather station stationed at Angmagssalik, Greenland. The warplanes were abandoned on the glacier and after the first winter never to be seen again.

ACADEMY PLASTIC HOBBY MODEL KIT 1/72 OV-10A BRONCO

The Rockwell international OV-l0A Bronco was the winner of a competition to provide the U.S. Air Force. the Navy, and the Marine Corps with a Light Armed Reconnaissance Aircraft (LARA). Designed as a counter-insurgency (COIN) plane the OV-10A was first delivered to the Armed Forces in 1969 and saw extensive duty in Vietnam. The Bronco can take off from short airstrips or can be filled with floats or skis for more varied uses. It is fitted to carry a wide variety of weapons but is more often used when equipped with doppler radar or TV reconnaissance apparatus. The Bronco's varied capabilities are even more apparent when considered in terms of its payload, however. A cargo compartment underneath the middle of the wing can hold five paratroops or two stretchers and a medic or more than 3,000 pounds of freight. In 1969, 15 OV-l0A's were fitted with laser rangers, Loran navigation systems, and stabilized
night Sighting systems for nighttime operations.

ACADEMY PLASTIC HOBBY MODEL KIT 1/35 M4A2 SHERMAN RUSSIAN ARMY TANK

The M4A2 Sherman was similar to the M4, with welded hull and cast turret, but was powered with twin GM 6-71 diesel engines. This was the only diesel engine version of the Sherman tank to see service in large numbers. Having a diesel engine, the M4A2 version's engine deck and backend is noticeably different from all other Shermans. The early production model had the 75mm gun M3 in the M34 gun mount and vision slots in the front armor plate. The gun mount was later replaced by M34A1 gun mount, which featured a direct telescope. Some versions were armed with 76mm gun. In later productions, the return rollers were moved to the rear of the bogie mount and the suspension was of the horizontal volute spring type. The M4A2 saw action in the European and Pacific theaters, and was mainly used by the US Marines and lend lease to the Soviet Union, British, and Free French. Over 8000 M4A2 were produced during the middle of World War II.
